When are hail storms the worst?
Weather can change in the blink of an eye — a sunny day can turn into a thunderstorm in a matter of minutes, fog can appear with seemingly no warning and natural disasters happen overnight.
Although the weather can be moody and changes as it pleases, there is still a pattern. Seasons and climates play a large role in what can happen, and affect the outcome of the worst storms. It’s very unlikely that there will be a heat wave in the middle of January or a snow storm in July.
Because the time of year and climate play a large role in the way weather acts, it’s easy to predict when the weather is going to be the worst to prepare.
Colorado is sometimes known for the bad hail storms because the elevation is so high and the air is so thin. When the hail falls, it falls harder than it does in other places where the elevation isn’t so high.
Although hail is always worse and can come at unpredictable times, there are some times where it is easy to predict when it will be bad.
Why is hail worse in Colorado?
Colorado’s Front Range — the mountain range that serves as a gateway to the Rocky Mountains and is the most eastern section of the Southern Rocky Mountains — is located right in the middle of “Hail Alley.”
“Hail Alley” is like “Tornado Alley” in the central area of the country, but instead of tornadoes, it is more prone to hail. It stretches from Alberta, Canada, to the most southern areas of Colorado. The high elevation and cold weather in most areas of “Hail Alley” keep the ice in hail solid, making it harder and more likely to damage property.
Because hail is so much worse in this area, it’s crucial that you are prepared for the worst and have a plan on what to do.
If hail damages your roof, who will you call?
If there are dents on your car, who will you call?
Make sure you have a plan in place when things go wrong and that you know exactly who is the best person to call.
What time of year is hail the worst in Colorado?
The Colorado hail season is nearly six months long, lasting from the middle of April until the middle of September. This is consistent with when hail is most common for the rest of the United States because it falls during the middle of spring, summer and beginning of fall. These are the times of year where heat and humidity are most common, so thunderstorms are also most common.
Hail storms fall most frequently in June, and are most destructive in June. Even though June is far away, make sure you have a plan on what to do when that time of year rolls around.

What time of day is hail the worst?
Again, hailstorms depend on when thunderstorms are the most common. Hail is usually the product of a thunderstorm, especially when the rain is hard and heavy.
According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms are most likely to occur during the afternoon and evening hours. However, they can occur year-round and at any time of the day. In southeastern and western states, most thunderstorms occur during the afternoon, so that’s when you can most expect hail to fall.
This gives you and your family plenty of time to prepare throughout the day and to get you ready for the worst that can possibly happen. Hail can damage your house and your car, but if you have the right plan going into the storm, hail shouldn’t be as much of a problem.
However, if the worst happens and you cannot prepare for the storm in time, make sure you have a gameplan after it happens. If your vehicle is damaged beyond small repairs, reach out to Colorado Hail Solutions and we will fix it.
